Back To School USA Trending Must-Haves: The Amazon Finds Parents Are Adding To Their Carts

So what do you actually need this year?

Every school sends a list, and every list is missing something. Usually the headphones. Sometimes the water bottle. Always the spares you end up buying again in January.

Here is the checklist I would work from, then the picks I think are worth buying properly.

Your back to school checklist

The big four. Buy these properly. They get used every day, all year.

• Backpack, with a laptop sleeve from middle school up
• Lunch box, leakproof
• Water bottle that fits the backpack side pocket
• Headphones, wired for younger kids

The consumables. Buy cheap, buy plenty, expect to buy again in January.

• Pencils, pens, erasers
• Crayons or coloured pencils for younger kids
• Glue sticks and scissors
• Folders, binders, subject notebooks

Getting organised. Optional, but this is where the daily chaos gets solved.

• Academic planner
• Pencil case or pouch
• Desk tray or homework caddy
• Locker accessories, middle school up

Older students only.

• Calculator, the exact model the school names
• Power bank
• Wireless earbuds

Print that, work through it, and you are covered. Now the bits worth thinking about.

The backpack always fails first

You buy one in August. A zip goes in October. You buy another one.

That is most people’s experience, and it is why the cheap bag is not the cheap option. It is the item that gets used every single day without exception.

What to look for: strong zips, padded straps, a side pocket that actually holds a bottle, and a laptop sleeve once they hit middle school. Then let them pick the colour, because a bag they like is a bag they will carry properly.

Lunch comes home untouched

If you have a picky eater you already know the problem. Everything gets mixed together, one thing touches another thing, and the whole lot comes back at 3pm.

The bottle leaks into the homework

Everyone has had this one. It only needs to happen once.

Three things matter: leakproof, easy to clean, and sized to fit the backpack. That third one catches people out. Sizing up seems sensible until it will not go in the side pocket and ends up loose in the bag.

Headphones are on the list now

This is the one that catches people out. Classrooms run on tablets and laptops, and most districts now expect kids to bring their own headphones rather than share.

For younger kids, buy wired. Nothing to charge, nothing to pair, harder to lose, and the volume limit protects their hearing. Older students will want wireless and will say so.

The calculator you buy twice

For older students this is the biggest single line on the list, and there is a trap in it.

Maths departments usually name one exact model. Something that looks equivalent may not be allowed in an exam. Get it wrong and you buy it twice, at close to a hundred dollars each time.

So check the supply list first. The TI-84 Plus CE is the one most commonly named, but confirm against your own school rather than taking my word for it.

Everything gets lost by October

Planners, pencil pouches, locker organisers, desk trays, homework caddies. All of it is aimed at the same problem: things going missing and mornings running late.

The planner is the one most people skip. It is also the one that decides whether homework is a routine or an argument, so I would start there.

Nothing to think about here. Buy in bulk if you have more than one child, because the same list comes round again in January, plus whatever the classroom donation list adds.

The short version

Spend on what gets used every day. Save on what gets used up.

Backpack, lunch box, bottle and headphones are worth the money. Pencils, glue and paper are not worth thinking about. Check the calculator model twice.

Order anything with a required model number in early August, because those are what sell out. The rest can wait.
